Take any four-digit number whose digits are not all the same, arrange the digits into the largest and smallest numbers possible, subtract, and repeat. Within at most seven steps you always reach 6174, then it repeats forever.

Indian mathematician D. R. Kaprekar announced this fixed point in 1949, and the analogous three-digit constant is 495.
